Co-Occurring Disorders

A person with co-occurring disorders can have depression, an alcohol or drug problem, as well as other mood disorders simultaneously. In order to be fully healed, the person needs treatment for all related problems.

The most common are:
  • Depressive disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder
  • Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other phobias
  • Other psychiatric disorders, such as mood and personality disorders
  • Chemical Dependency
Many times chemical dependency is an attempt to feel calmer, more energized or happier. This is called "self-medication." Frequent self-medication may lead a person to become physically or psychologically dependent on alcohol or drugs. On the other hand, a person whose substance abuse problem has become severe may develop symptoms of other disorders including:
  • Depression
  • Rage
  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Depressions
  • Attempts at suicide
Co-Occurring disorders are more common than you might think, but there is hope. As a relative or friend, you can play an important role in encouraging a person to seek professional treatment by helping the person to find and stick with an effective, healing program. As with any illness, a person with co-occurring disorders can improve once proper care is given. By seeking out information, you can learn to recognize these signs and symptoms and help someone live a healthier, more fulfilling life.
